Session:
Code Updates for Concrete Masonry – What Designers Need to Know
With the recent changes to the Texas building code requirements, many jurisdictions will need to use a newer version of the TMS 402 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and companion TMS 602 Specification. This presentation will review significant changes from the 2009 to the 2021 International Building Codes with a focus on concrete masonry. We will also review the changes made in the specification for concrete masonry units (ASTM C90) and the related impacts on concrete masonry design.

Session:
Low Embodied Carbon CMU
Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) are made with dry-cast concrete which uses less water and cement than wet-cast. They also sequester more carbon. Mini embodied carbon cradle to gate Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) studies are compared for CMU, ICF, tilt-up, wood frame and steel frame.

Session:
Are Masonry’s Passive Fire Resistance Attributes & Resiliency Being Overlooked?
This program reviews recent fires and historical statistics to demonstrate that the Balanced Fire Safety Design concept (ie, non-combustible concrete masonry) is being minimized and overlooked in the built environment. Reasons for this, from building code changes to changing design trends to perceived cost savings to marketing messages are analyzed.

Session:
Model Driven Design and Construction for Masonry
This program will present an overview of how 3D computer models are being applied to produce better masonry designs and improve construction efficiency. Case studies in coordination using unit-based masonry models with rebar will be featured as well as the latest in point cloud models and clash detection.

Session:
Masonry Building Information Management Systems (BIMS) and Masonry Design
Reducing embodied carbon in data centers, warehousing and industrial buildings: A feasibility analysis of masonry vs. tilt-up concrete construction methodologies
The resulting analysis demonstrates that substituting masonry for tilt-up walls is a practical pathway in terms of cost, timeline, and constructability – however the use of masonry delivers deep reductions in embodied carbon compared to tilt-up
