Leander Middle School Career Day
March 8 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Career Day Presenter Information
Dear Career Day Presenter:
Thank you for agreeing to participate in Leander Middle School’s Career Day on Friday, March 8, 2024 Please plan on arriving between 8:30-9:00a.m. and being finished by 11:45a.m. When you arrive at LMS, please check in at the front office where you will be asked for your identification and be given a visitor’s badge. We will direct you from there! Your first session should begin at 9:45 a.m. We will have coffee and light refreshments available and will help you get settled in your presentation room. Feel free to set up and then watch our keynote speaker in the gym, if you are interested!
For your presentation you will be assigned to a classroom and student groups will rotate to you. Each of your sessions will be 25 minutes long. We suggest a presentation of 20 minutes followed by 5 minutes for questions and answers. Groups will be made up of approx. 25 students. You will most likely have 4 groups rotate through, so your presentation will repeat up to 4 times. Let us know if you have any time constraints and need to leave earlier or arrive later. Please keep in mind the ages of our middle school students when planning your presentation as it needs to be age appropriate. Students are highly engaged in presentations including visuals or hands on opportunities. LMS teachers will be in each session to monitor the students and facilitate your needs. You are welcome to bring items to give away to students, but please do not feel it is necessary.
Here are some guidelines for what we would like you to talk about:
-
Where you work and your title
-
A brief job description – what your duties include
-
Education:
-
Type of degree or training you have received
-
How long did it take you to get trained?
-
Where did you get your training? (trade school, two year program, college…)
-
Skills needed for success in your career field
-
If appropriate, a demonstration of the equipment used in your profession (or pictures, power point…)
-
Why did you choose this career? What interested you about it?
-
Interesting things about your job and why it’s a great job
-
Question-Answer (time permitting)
Please let us know if you have any special requests such as furniture or the amount of space you will need. If you have a student at LMS, we will make sure his/her group will be one of the groups to visit your presentation if you would like.
If you are video conferencing from a distance, we will send you a link and contact number for you to connect with an assigned room monitor. This staff member will help you stay connected for your sessions as students rotate in to see you. We will have a better idea of what format will be best available to us closer to March, i.e. google meet, zoom, etc.
If you are providing a recorded presentation, here are some points:
Please use your preferred format to create the presentation to best fit your personality (Slides, Pages, Powerpoint, video, etc.). Whatever the format for your presentation, please include a voiceover so that students are able to press and play. We are asking that you record a 15-25 minute max presentation and provide a short, typed blurb about your career for us to put on the website. This blurb will consist of a short, student-friendly description of your job to give students an idea of which presentations they should explore based on their interests. Submit your presentation in a .mov or .mp4 format. Please upload your file to your preferred hosting platform and send the link to laura.cathcart@leanderisd.org You can also share the video presentation through google, if that is easier. Please give editing access to laura.cathcart@leanderisd.org
We look forward to your visit and presentations. Your participation will enhance learning for our students here at Leander Middle School.
Thanks again for being willing to help educate our students,
